INSPIRES (Innovative Networks Supporting People Who Investigate Research Environments and Spaces)
INSPIRES utilises a digital infrastructure to help strengthen research communities and to extend communities beyond their existing members. In particular the project develops tools that use using the connections of its members within institutions and projects they are part of, to find relevant researchers and organisations. The technologies used for the project are based on those developed as part of the VRE3 Brain project at Coventry University, work carried out by the VRE3 Cancer Imaging VRE project and the Institutional Innovation BRII project at Oxford University, and work carried out under several projects at Warwick University. These technologies are based on the use of data about researchers and their interests, publications and institutions in a relational database.
INSPIRES investigates the benefits that can be gained from using structured data representing the researchers and their connections in a semantic form. This semantic form is more flexible towards adding new types of fields and relationships in the data and allows linking data from various sources. INSPIRES investigates how this can lead to a richer dataset for searching related researchers.
